Underfloor heating

Warm floors, under tile and stone

Water and electric underfloor heating, planned with the floor and tiled to BS 5385-3.

Our approach

Planned with the floor

There is no single best system. We examine the floor, the height available and your budget, then plan the build-up for your room. Certified plumbers and Part P registered electricians make every connection.

Screeds are commissioned and moisture tested before tiling, with movement joints where the guide sets out. We recommend Warmup: bought through Topps Tiles, electric systems come with extra Warmup cover, including free repair even after an installation error.

  • Tiling onto heated screeds
  • Low-profile grooved boards for water pipes, over screed or timber
  • Electric mats on XPS-core boards, with levelling and uncoupling membrane
  • Grooved uncoupling membranes for single-wire systems
  • Moisture testing before tiling, including BAL carbide tests
  • Warmup systems with extra cover through Topps Tiles

FAQ

Questions clients ask

Straight answers. For anything specific to your project, call 07842 424614 or send an enquiry.

Which underfloor heating is best under tiles?

It depends on the floor, the height available and your budget. Water systems cost less to run over large areas. Electric systems are thinner and quicker to fit in a single room. We examine the floor and advise what suits it best. Foil and film heaters are made for wood and laminate floors, not for tiles.

Can you fit underfloor heating over an existing timber floor?

Yes. After checking the floor is stiff enough, we use low-profile grooved XPS boards for water pipes, or XPS-core boards with an electric mat, self-levelling and an uncoupling membrane.

When can tiles go on a new heated screed?

A sand and cement screed must be at least 21 days old. The heating is then raised by no more than 5 °C a day, held for 3 days and cooled before tiling. Before tiling, the screed must read below 75% relative humidity, or 0.5% for anhydrite in a carbide test.

When can I turn the heating on after tiling?

Only once the adhesive and grout have fully cured. Then it goes up slowly, a few degrees a day. We give you the exact date for the products used, usually 1 to 2 weeks after tiling.

What does the extra Warmup cover include?

Warmup electric systems bought through Topps Tiles cover both the product and the installation. Warmup will repair the system free of charge, even if an installation error caused the damage, and Wi-Fi thermostats get a free lifetime warranty. Mats and cables carry a lifetime warranty once registered within 30 days. Warmup’s terms apply.

Do you connect the heating?

No. Water systems are connected by certified plumbers and electric systems by Part P registered electricians we work with. We plan and coordinate the whole floor.
